The return of Tigers baseball and Tiger Woods

The MLB baseball season for the World Series bound Detroit Tigers opens up Friday in Cincinnati. Let’s be totally honest, the Tigers are not going to the World Series in 2020, we all know that. Actually, the boys in Las Vegas have set the Tigers season win total at 21.5 games. The season will be 60 games and if you think the Tigers can go 22-38 in the shortened season, bet your money on the over 21.5. The Tigers — by Las Vegas experts — are going to be the worst team in Major League Baseball. I have to admit, I also think they will be one of the bottom three teams in victories this season.

The Tigers have announced that Matthew Boyd will start Opening Day in Cincinnati on Friday night. I thought he was the obvious choice and the right choice. The Cincinnati Reds will send Sonny Gray to the mound to open the season for them. The Tigers, after opening up on the road with a three game series in Cincinnati, will come home to Comerica Park. The Tigers home opener will be Monday with the Kansas City Royals for four games. The Reds then will be at Comerica for three games and then the St. Louis Cardinals for two games. It will seem so odd with no fans in attendance that I can’t imagine it at all. I guess I will find out how odd come Friday night.

The Tigers will have two new faces in C.J. Cron and Jonathan Schoop on the roster. I see Cameron Maybin is back on the Tigers roster this season after playing for numerous teams since he was in Detroit. What should be the fat guys’ prediction for the Tigs in 2020? I say 19-41 will be the Tigers record this season. What are your thoughts on the Tigers this year? Feel free to send me an email if you would like, as I would love to hear some other opinions.

The fat guy World Series prediction is the L.A. Dodgers and the New York Yankees. PLAY BALL FINALLY!!!!

Jon Rahm cruised to an easy victory this weekend at the Memorial golf tournament. I mean, on Sunday he was in front with a eight shot lead!

How many times do you see that on a Sunday final round? The answer is very few times. Jon Rahm’s victory makes him the No. 1 golfer in the world. The only other Spaniard to reach No. 1 was the late Seve Ballesteros.

The return of Tiger Woods was nothing spectacular after his long layoff from competition. The fact is, Tiger had not played in over five months. Tiger made the cut barely at plus three and finished the tournament at six over par. It’s scary to watch Tiger Woods play golf as his back stiffened up on him a couple times over the weekend. Tiger did not say when he will play in another golf event, and he is not entered to play in the 3M Open in Minnesota this weekend. The fact that Tiger is 44 years old is hard for me to come to grips with. Where has the time gone?

The NHL will return to play on Aug. 1 with a best of five qualification round. The Eastern Conference hub city will be Toronto. The Western Conference hub city is Edmonton. How strange will it be to watch hockey in August? Still, the fat guy will be watching. The Detroit Red Wings will be at home watching also. The NHL is hoping to open the 2020/21 season on Dec. 1. I like the fact that hockey will try to play a full schedule of 82 games. Who will win the Cup this year? I have no idea until I see a few games played here in early August.

The NBA is gearing up for the restart of the season as all teams are in Orlando. The players are being tested for COVID-19 pretty regularly. The season is to resume at the end of the month if everything stays the course in Orlando. I wonder how good of shape the players will be in physically? The NBA is a demanding sport physically and there will be lots of games in a short period of time. It will be an interesting watch for sure. I can be reached at thefatguy@mihomepaper.com.
