The Salvation Army receives $25,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint

FLINT — The Salvation Army, serving the needs of Genesee County, has received a grant of $25,000 from the Community Foundation for Greater Flint, Greater Flint Urgent Relief Fund, to support its Covid Food and Lunch EOC Program.

This grant will ensure the continued success of our volunteer lunch program that provides volunteers, working at the Emergency Operation Center hubs across Genesee County, a nutritious lunch.

The volunteers are packing food boxes and delivering lunches and food to elderly members of the community that do not have the ability to go out of their homes and go to the store. These organizations do not have funding to pay for their volunteers’ lunches, so the E.O.C. ask if The Salvation Army would help in this capacity during the “Stay At Home” mandate by the State of Michigan.

The Emergency Operation Centers (E.O.C.) Hubs include the following locations: Emmanuel Church; River Church Center of Hope Goodrich; Center of Hope Fenton; Mayfair Bible Church; Calvary Church, A United Methodist Community; Genesee County Jail; Eastside Mission; Insight and their EOC Headquarters located in Downtown Flint.

They are preparing and delivering meals each day (M-F) to the volunteers at the command center and those who are at their various hub sites. MTA Your Ride drivers are taking boxed nutritious lunches that include wet naps and packaged plastic silverware placed in styrofoam clam shells with a sandwich, chips/ cookies and fresh fruit.

Daily menus include: Chicken Salad Wraps, Ham & Turkey Sandwiches, Chicken Quesadillas, Pulled Pork, Fish Sandwiches, Chicken Tacos, Pasta Salad among others. All boxed lunches have fresh fruit or vegetables with dip, chips or cookies. In the first five weeks of the program, 3,360 lunches were served an average of 120 meals per day.

The Salvation Army anticipates this funding will help to continue this program for as long as the need is there. These funds will also support The Salvation Army Beecher Corps, 1475 W. Coldwater Road, Flint.

Captains Mike and Janice Quick continue to offer the food reclamation distribution program every Tuesday morning. This program served over 13,300 families in 2019. Also, diapers, baby wipes and formula are at an all-time high priority for young mothers for their children and are also available.
