The Detroit Tigers sealed their fate this past weekend in Cleveland dropping two of their three games in Cleveland. The Cleveland Indians absolutely owned the Tigers this season going 13-2 against them. The Tigers do have four more home games with them in late September, but the Tigers are three games behind Toronto for the wildcard spot.
I don’t think Detroit will catch them with 13 games left in the season. The Tigers have Atlanta, Cleveland, Minnesota and the Kansas City Royals left on the schedule and currently own a 79-70 record. I figure it will take 90 wins to make the playoffs. I don’t see Detroit going 11-2 down the stretch run.
I wonder, and you must wonder, if Brad Ausmus will be back as the skipper in 2017. The question is, has he done enough to earn the right to manage this ball club next season? I think he stinks as a manager and it’s time to pull the plug on Brad! Brad you have been given significant talent and have stumbled and bumbled around in the dugout. It’s time for the “Pizza Man” to hire a new skipper in Motown.
Sparty Party in Indiana
The Michigan State Spartans went to Notre Dame and administer a whipping to the Irish! The Spartans, who looked lack luster against Furman two weeks ago, were anything but against the Irish. The play of quarterback Tyler O’Connor, who was 19-for-26 and passing for 241 yards was awesome. The Spartans had two great efforts from their running backs in Gerald Holmes and LJ Scott going for 100 yards and 98 yards toting the rock. The defense was solid, as most Spartan teams are. I did not expect the MSU boys to win, but they did 36-28 and the score is closer than the game really was! It was Spartan domination. The Spartans open conference play Saturday at noon in East Lansing taking on the pesky Wisconsin Badgers. This should be a good, hard-hitting football game. Green and White 23, Bad Badger Breath 17.
Rough start in Ann Arbor
The Michigan Wolverines started out slow against the Buffaloes of Colorado but came storming back to win 45-28. Michigan spotted Colorado a 14-0 lead early and it looked like an upset in the making. However, the Maize and Blue made the Buffaloes turn blue in the face after the rough Michigan start in the first quarter. The Wolverines open up the Big Ten with Penn State at the Big House at 3:30 p.m. The Wolverines are a solid 18-point favorite. Prediction: Harbaugh We Trust 34 and Nit Wit Lions 13.
A couple quick college football observations after three weeks of the season. The best team in the country right now is the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Ohio State Buckeyes reload and don’t rebuild. The Louisville Cardinals are a legitimate college football title contender. What that football team did in dismantling the Florida State Seminoles was darn right impressive. The Western Michigan Broncos have defeated two Big Ten teams so far this season. The coach at WMU, P J Fleck, will be recruited by larger universities really soon. Western, enjoy the ride while he is currently the coach
Same old, same old
Do you all remember last week when I said if the Lions lose to Tennessee in the home opener we can all scream same old Lions? I am belting out as loud as I can, same old Lions! What a total and utter debacle and dismal performance they put on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans! It was an embarrassing 16-15 loss to a bad Titans football team. Seventeen penalties? Down-right sickening! They had two touchdowns taken off the board because of penalties. They let the Titans march right down the field for the winning score converting a fourth-and-10 for a touchdown. We all need to have our heads examined as to why we root for this woeful franchise.
