Three more on-call firefighters hired

FLINT TWP. — The township board approved hiring three new on-call firefighters last week. They are Nicholas Buttrey, Charles Moran and Bryan Wistuba, all township residents.

Buttrey and Moran are trainees who will be attending the Fire Academy in October, said assistant Fire Chief Mike Burkley. Wistuba has prior experience and is being hired on probationary status. All three men have completed written and oral exams and passed physicals and physical agility testing.

Wistuba served five years with the Swartz Creek Fire Department but wanted to work closer to home after moving to the Western Hills subdivision last November. He works as a manager at Tuffy Tire & Auto Services Center on Miller Road, Burkley said.

Buttrey is a young man wants to pursue a firefighting career, Burkley said. He has served with the Army National Reserve and works at the Salvation Army.

Moran is married and works as an IT specialist for Grand Blanc Township.

The fire department has an ongoing open call to hire more on-call firefighters. For several years, like many other fire departments nationwide, Flint Township faces an ongoing struggle to hire and retain on-call staff.

Applications also can be obtained online or at Fire Station #1, 5331 Reuben Street, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Fire service experience is not necessary but preferred. All successful applicants will be trained.

All applicants must be a United States Citizen; live in or within 1/2 mile of Flint Township; possess a High School Diploma or GED; be at least 18 years old; possess a valid Michigan Drivers License; possess a phone; have reliable vehicle transportation; be able to respond to emergency calls (when off work); attend two trainings a month and have no felony records or convictions.

Applicants also must successfully complete a police background check, written test, physical test, personal interview and medical review.
