FLINT TWP. — The Flint Township board has unanimously approved temporary employment offers for three new on-call firefighters.
They are Kevin Borse, Sav’Veon Tarft and Douglas Taylor.
They have been selected to start the recruitment process including a written and physical test, said Fire Chief John Ringwelski. The three would then participate in the fall academy training for firefighters.
The fire department has an ongoing recruitment effort to find on-call firefighters due to morale and retention problems in the department in the past few years.
Ringwelski said that eight candidates applied but only three were approved to move on to the next stage.
Ringwelski said the department’s staff size did not increase with the three newcomers because they are replacing others who have left.
Job applications can be obtained and submitted at Fire Station # 1, 5331 Reuben Street, M-F 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or downloaded online at www.flinttownship.org/Portals/68/ FireDocs/applicaton.pdf
Applicants must meet several criteria including living within one mile of the township, be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license, phone and reliable transportation; able to respond to emergency calls at all times of the day and night, able to attend two monthly trainings and able to pass a police background check, physical test and medical review.
