Time to break out the Cheeseball predictions

Fat Guy Corner

The Fat Guy is sitting here watching the Quick Lane Bowl from Ford Field between Boston College and Maryland. I have attended four of these games at Ford Field and enjoyed all of them. I remember going to watch Randy Moss when he was at Marshall. I have also watched Western Michigan and Central Michigan play.

The college bowl atmosphere is really enjoyable and fun. I suggest to all you college football fans to attend a bowl game if you can. The Eastern Michigan game against Old Dominion was a great watch. The fact that Eastern Michigan had not been to a bowl game in 29 years made it super special to that university I am sure. I would like to see Eastern Michigan become competitive every season in the MAC, like Central and Western currently are.

It was a tough loss for Eastern, losing 24-20 to Old Dominion. The bowl season is about a third of the way done so far with many of the better bowls coming up. The first big bowl game will be Friday night as the Michigan Wolverines and the Florida State Seminoles will hook up at the Orange Bowl. The boys from Las Vegas have installed the Wolverines as a touchdown favorite. These two football schools have lots of tradition and are proud programs. I expect a very competitive football game and both teams will strap on the helmets looking for a win. I believe Michigan would love to wipe out the bitter taste of the Ohio State loss with a victory. I know coach Jim Harbaugh will have his team ready. I think the difference will be the stout Michigan defense. Let’s Go Blue! Fat Guy Cheese Ball Prediction: Michigan 27 and Florida State 16.

Playoff action kicks off

The college football playoff games are on Saturday. The first game is at 3 p.m. with No. 1-seed Alabama taking on No. 4-seed Washington. The boys from Vegas have installed the Alabama boys as two touchdown favorites. Who would think a playoff game would have that large of a spread? The Crimson Tide will Roll Tide Roll over the Washington Huskies. This one will stay close early and in the second half Bama will pull away. The Cheeseball says: Tide 24 and Huskies 7.

The second tilt is going to be a dandy as the Ohio State Buckeyes will play the Clemson Tigers. The Buckeyes are threepoint favorites to win the Fiesta Bowl. I personally think the Clemson Tigers will beat the Buckeyes and make a return visit to the National Title game. The quarterback play will be the difference and I think Deshaun Watson from Clemson will outplay J.T. Barrett of Ohio State. The offenses will be clicking and I look for some points to be scored in the Fiesta Bowl. The Cheeseball Prediction: Clemson Orange 37 and Scarlett and Gray 30. I like the USC Trojans to defeat Penn State in the Rose Bowl, although I hope I am wrong! The Cotton Bowl winner will be Wisconsin, that will end the “Row The Boat” perfect season of Western Michigan. I will be pulling for Western to get the victory, however. What a season for Western in 2016.

Lions to win it all!

It’s almost Monday Night Football time as I sit here typing and the Detroit Lions can clinch a wildcard playoff spot with a victory. I say fear not Lions fans, a victory on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers wins the NFC North. The Lions have basically two chances to qualify for the playoffs. I am already tired of the Aaron Rodgers talk of ‘run the table’ jargon. Deep in my heart I believe the Lions will defeat the Packers on Sunday night and the national media can cry that poster boy Rodgers lost. The Lions have received no national love from the media and it’s irritating to me. They believe it’s a forgone conclusion that Detroit will lose to Green Bay! This is not the SOL Lions! I will be in my seat at Ford Field enjoying a Lions victory! I stand by that! Yes, Detroit will be 2016 NFC North Champions!

The NFL picks are next. It’s been a trying year, to say the least. I want to finish over .500. thefatguy@mihomepaper.com
