FLINT — For most people the holiday season tends to be one of the busiest times of the year. From Hanukah celebrations, to the annual office party, we are frequently interacting with family, coworkers, and complete strangers.
While joining your local Toastmasters club won’t make your Aunt Mildred stop asking when you’ll find love and settle down, it can help you be confident and well-spoken in your answer. Long-time member and current Genesee Toastmasters President, Lavon Compton, says, “Toastmasters has helped me to be less self-conscious when answering a question or telling a story. Now I feel comfortable taking a little more time to give details which make the conversation more interesting.”
It never hurts to be prepared, either. Before your event, take some time to think about a few of your interesting or unusual hobbies or qualities. This will keep you from being stumped when met with the dreaded, “So tell me about yourself!” Another way to hone the skill of thinking on your feet and answering quickly is the Toastmaster practice of Table Topics. This segment in nearly every club meeting consists of taking 1-2 minutes to answer an impromptu question or cue.
