FLINT TWP.— Five new recruits have answered the call to become on-call township firefighters, Fire Chief John Ringwelski reported to the township board this week.
The board unanimously approved his request to make conditional hiring offers to three of them who have to go through the training academy. Two others already have prior firefighting experience, Ringwelski said.
The new hires are Jose Hernandez, Spencer MacLeod and Quajae Patrick. Each has received a conditional employment offer in order to undergo testing and schooling.
Ringwelski said he would request hiring offers for the other two candidates after they successfully complete physical agility testing and other pre-hiring requirements.
Keeping up staffing levels is an ongoing effort for the fire department, due in part to retirements, resignations and a scarcity of new people interested in firefighting work.
A standing application for new recruits is posted on the township’s website. The department has also extended residency requirements slightly outside of the township borders in an effort to attract more people.
An application form is posted online or can be picked up at Fire Station #1, 5331 Reuben Street, from 8 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
No experience is required but applicants must live within one mile of the township, possess a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old, possess a phone, have reliable transportation, attend trainings twice a month and be willing to respond to emergency calls day or night, among other requirements.
