DAVISON TWP. — Police Chief Rick Freeman told the board of trustee Aug. 10 he is looking at the seeking accreditation for his department to keep ahead of what might be coming down from the federal government.
Freeman spoke about the move he is considering strictly as an “informational piece” to let board know what his plan is.
“I want to seriously look at accreditation for our police department,” he told the board. “I haven’t always been a fan of accreditation, not a fan of getting there.”
He said President Donald Trump mandated accreditation in June for departments who want to continue to receive federal funds.
He said there are also several police reform bills that include an accreditation piece.
“This would keep us in line with what comes down the pipeline from the federal government,” said Freeman.
He said he’s taken cost factors into account and hopes to start the process in October. The move will require him to shuffle some staff around as officers will be away undergoing the accreditation process.
