Township surprised by news of Genesee Valley Center sale

FLINT TWP. — Genesee County’s largest mall has a new owner, and changes are already being made.

Genesee Valley Center, 3341 S. Linden Road, has been purchased by Namdar Realty Group, which owns several malls in Michigan, including Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw Township.

A woman who answered the phone at the mall’s management office Friday said there currently is no manager employed at the mall, and Namdar Realty Group is in the process of hiring one.

She referred all inquiries to Jelson Santos, director of operations for Namdar. Santos did not respond to messages.

According to reports, the new owners immediately made cuts to the mall’s operational staff. The reports stated Allied Universal’s mall security contract was terminated effective Dec. 31, and Namdar Realty Group will use in-house security personnel as well as in-house housekeeping. Allied Universal also did not respond to messages.

Flint Township Economic Enhancement Director Tracey Tucker said the sale came as a surprise to her and other township officials.

“It was a surprise to the people here. We don’t know what went on,” Tucker said. “I’ve been trying to contact the new owners to see if they want to continue with the partnership that we created in the past.”

The township has partnered with the mall on a number of community events including the arrival of Santa Claus during the holiday season and a summer concert series held in the Outdoor Village between Bar Louie and Wahlburgers.

Genesee Valley Center opened in 1970 with approximately 1.3 million square feet of leasable area. The mall’s three anchor stores are JCPenney, Macy’s and Play Big. It has more than 120 tenants, including a food court.
