The Detroit Red Wings’ trade deadline became stockpile draft picks day in Detroit. The first one to go was veteran defensemen Mike Green to the Edmonton Oilers. The return was a conditional third- or fourth-round pick. The Oilers were not done dealing with the Red Wings, as they also acquired “Double A” Andreas Athanasiou for two secondround draft picks. The 25-yearold Athanasiou tantalized the Red Wings’ brass and fans with his speed and offensive skills. The word ‘potential’ surrounded him in his Detroit career. The problem was injuries and defensive liabilities on the ice. I mean, a minus-45 on the ice is laughable.
The Edmonton Oilers’ GM, Kenny Holland, the ex-Red Wings’ GM, feels these two will help the Oilers’ playoff push. The Steve Yzerman plan is stock draft picks and hope they pan out over the next three to five years on the ice.
The core players of Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Tyler Bertuzzi, Filip Hronek and Filip Zadina remain intact. The return of coach Jeff Blashill will be evaluated at the end of the season, but I think Stevie is bringing him back for year six.
The Red Wings have six picks in the first three rounds and this team really needs them to pan out. The bottom line is, four straight years and no playoffs and probably a fifth after next year in HockeyTown. That stinks.
The Red Wings are a horrible hockey club and improvement should not be hard to achieve. It really stinks having to watch this abysmal hockey team night after night. I do however believe in Stevie Y to turn this franchise around.
Pistons in total rebuild mode
The Detroit Pistons’ dumping of salary cap contracts continued with the buyout of ball hog Reggie Jackson. Reggie was in the last year of a five-year, $80 million deal. The L.A. Clippers became the new team of Reggie. I think he is a good fit for L.A. and its playoff run. Reggie is a great offensive player and can score the basketball.
The Pistons also bought out Markieff Morris after just signing him over the summer. The Pistons are in total rebuild mode like the Red Wings. The two major winter sports teams in Michigan are awful and Little Caesars is a place where these two teams play awful hockey and basketball!!
Lions also still playing around
The New England Patriots II (laugh, wink, wink), the Detroit Lions, have released Snacks Harrison with two years left on his deal. The Lions signed him to a one-year $11 million extension over the summer. The move saves them $7 million in cap space. Do the Lions realize that they were 26th in points-allowed and 31st in yards-allowed defensively? Apparently not!!
The trade talk of Darius Slay due to money and not wanting to pay is crazy. The trade of Quandre Diggs to Seattle for basically nothing was beyond curious and did not sit well inside the Lions’ locker room, either.
The Lions did re-sign Danny Amendola to a one-year deal at $4.5 million dollars; yipppeee! The Lions resemble the Patriots in this way: ZERO RESEMBLENCE!!
Let’s can these two clowns, Quinn and Patricia, before the NFL Draft! Hey, Martha. Take off the sunglasses and do what is right by Lions fans; PLEASE! I cannot take any more of these stupid moves these two guys make! If you want to be the Patriots, hire the “Hoodie”, not castoffs, and play like the Patriots will ya? Dang, I am tired of this franchise!
March Madness fast approaching
The college basketball season is rapidly coming to a close. The Fat Guy is tired of the word “Bubble Team” already. I have to listen to this term every single time I watch a basketball game. I cannot take it anymore!
The Wolverines’ posted two big road wins at Rutgers and Purdue. The Spartans also hammered Nebraska. The overall records of Michigan and Michigan State both sit at 18-9. email@example.com
