FLINT TWP. — The township board approved hiring two new on-call firefighters at its Monday night meeting. They are Ken McNally, an experienced firefighter and Bennie Griggs, a trainee.
Assistant Fire Chief Mike Burkley said that McNally is a third-shift worker who is available to work during the day. He has served previously as an on-call firefighter for the Mundy Township Area Fire Department, completed firefighter I and II training about 15 years ago and has been inactive for about a year. He also has served with the National Guard since 2007. Griggs, who was present at the meeting was asked to stand, while Burkley told the board about him. He works for General Motors but would be available to work during the day. He served a few years as an Explorer with the Swartz Creek Fire Department but will need to attend the fire academy in October, Burkley said, adding that Griggs will begin department training immediately. He also said that Griggs did well on the physical agility test. Trustee Barb Vert took the opportunity to inquire about the status of five on-call firefighters hired conditionally in mid-June.
Burkley responded that one had washed out and two were still pending because their work schedules conflict with the times physical agility testing is offered at the Clio Fire Department. No more testing is schedule until September but Burkley said they are working with the candidates to arrange a time that works for them. Burkley said three attempts to set up the testing have not worked out.
