FLINT TWP. — Before Shanon Wooley could open her new hair salon, she had to remove a roll-up entry door, cover a cement floor, install drywall and generally do a complete overhaul on the industrial-like building.

With help from a contractor and her father who owns the building, Wooley rolled up her sleeves and got to work on creating her first business.

The Studio by Shanon, 3042 S. Ballenger Hwy, opened in mid-July and Wooley could not be prouder or happier about the outcome.

“I absolutely love being my own boss,” she said. “It makes me love doing hair even more.”

After seven years of working in another salon, she decided it was time to strike out on her own. Soon she will be joined by a former co-worker of four years, who will be taking over the second chair in the approximately 800 square-foot salon.

Wooley did all the decorating herself from choosing paint colors to making the furniture.

Wooley also works as a hair instructor at Regency Beauty Institute on Miller Road. She’s a graduate of Sharp’s Academy of Hairstyling in Grand Blanc.

Finding Wooley’s salon might leave some potential clients scratching their heads in confusion. The shop sits well back from the road in the last set of buildings at the bend on Ballenger Hwy. before it turns west and becomes W. 12th Street. From the road, it looks more like a light industrial site because of adjacent warehouse looking businesses.

But Wooley has turned her space, which she is leasing from her father, into an attractive full-fledged beauty spot.

As a new business owner, she’s off to a good start with support from many loyal customers, she said.

She offers all hair services including a Brazilian Blowout smoothing treatment, Redken coloring and haircuts.

“I have great prices,’’ Wooley said. “I would say a lot lower than other salons around here.”

General operating hours are 2-8 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m.-4 p.m.. on Tuesday; noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and other times by appointment.

The salon can be reached by calling 810-780-4419.
