VFW Post 822 celebrates 100 years with Harley raffle

GRAND BLANC TWP. — VFW Post 822 in Grand Blanc Township will raffle off a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in September as part of the celebration of 100 years of continuous service to the community.

The 2021 Harley Davidson Softail has an estimated value of $13,000. The VFW will award a second prize of $5,000, a third prize of $2,500, a fourth prize of $1,000 and prizes of $500 for fifth through eighth places.

Tickets cost $10 each to help raise money to replace the VFW Post 822 parking lot.

The drawing will take place between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 at the post, 5065 S. Saginaw St.

“Veterans of World War I and II, Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan have served the Genesee County community through VFW Post 822 for 100 years and here is an excellent opportunity for the community to return the favor by taking a $10 chance on a benefit raffle ticket to raise needed dollars for this non-profit veterans’ community service organization,” said Tom Toohey, post communications manager.

The VFW resulted in 1899 from the amalgamation of several societies formed immediately following the Spanish-American War. Flint VFW Post 822 was formed in August of 1921.

The VFW Post 822 Honor Guard has proudly served at committal services for hundreds of veterans around Genesee County for more than 30 years and is an original Honor Guard Team at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly since its opening day in October of 2005.

VFW Post 822 also offers burger nights from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, and Friday fish fry nights, also from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The food service is open to the public to help defray the cost of maintaining the post. — L.R.
