RICHFIELD TWP. — Former Treasurer Debbie Buterakos is expected to be appointed to serve as acting treasurer at the April 12 meeting of the Board of Trustees.
Supervisor Joe Madore said the appointment of Buterakos comes after the unexpected resignation of Treasurer Matt Morris, who was just elected to the office in November.
“Because this vacancy occurs more than 182 days before the next general election, this appointment will only be until that next general election in November 2022,” said Madore. “Then, whoever wins that will be in office until the end of the normal 4-year term which ends in November 2024.”
Buterakos has been serving in the capacity of deputy treasurer, helping train Morris since his election.
She said she was surprised by his sudden departure, which reportedly had to do with he and his family moving from the township to a new home.
“I like this job, anyway,” said Buterakos. “I just don’t know for how long I want to keep doing it.”
She served as treasurer from 2012-2020 when she opted not to seek re-election. Buterakos said she didn’t know if she would run again for the position in 2022.
Morris, a Republican, defeated resident Kim Dowrie for the treasurer’s position by a vote of 2,689-2,358 in the Nov. 3 election.
