Wake the Bear race kicks off in Flushing on Sept. 25

FLUSHING — Area runners and walkers can help alleviate childhood hunger by registering for the 6th Annual Wake the Bear race in Flushing on Sept. 25.

Wake the Bear, which benefits Bread 4 Life, will offer 10k and 5k races and a 5k competitive walk through the Springview neighborhood and Flushing County Park. The race will start at the corner of Luce Avenue and Coutant Street near Holy Cross Lutheran Church and continue down McKinley Road to Flushing County Park and back to the church. The 10k will start at 8 a.m., followed by the 5k run/walk at 8:25 a.m. and a Cub Run for kids at 9:30 a.m.

Participants can register on-site before the race or online at wakethebear.org by Sept. 23. The cost will be $30 to enter the 10k or 5k events and $10 to enter kids into the Cub Run.

On Sept. 24, Wake the Bear will also host a Pizza Throwdown dinner and auction at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

All proceeds from the race and the dinner will go to Bread 4 Life, which provides take-home weekend meals for over 100 kids in the Flushing Community School District.

Since beginning in 2015, Wake the Bear has raised close to $60,000 for Bread 4 Life, and last year’s virtual race gathered nearly $9,000.
