We was robbed!!

The NFL is becoming a huge joke to NFL fans, I believe. The fact that so many of these games are nothing but a series of yellow flags littering the football field is absurd. I mean, every single play you have to look on the field for a flag. The Buffalo Bills were penalized 17 times for Pete’s sake. The defensive pass interference and defensive holding calls are numerous and are absolutely killing the flow of NFL football games. I personally don’t want to watch 45-42 football scores week in and week out. The defensive players don’t even have a chance anymore with the current rules.

The Detroit Lions, speaking of refereeing, were robbed again of a no call on Monday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks. A fumble by Calvin Johnson went into the end zone and was batted out by a defensive player. This is an illegal play by the defense. The zebras did not make the call. The Lions lose the football game and have to wonder why all these calls always go against them? The Calvin Johnson “Catch Rule” cost Detroit a victory against the Chicago Bears. Then we had the pass interference pick-upthe flag call in last year’s playoff game against Dallas. Now it’s the “batted ball no call” gate. It’s a darn joke that this garbage keeps happening week in and week out. The NFL is a billion-dollar industry and they have bankers, truckers, lawyers, dentists, doctors, car wash attendants, plumbers, and gynecologists for referees. What the heck is that all about? All the other major sports have real full time officials. I say it’s so stupid having these part time officials and it’s turning off a lot of us NFL fans. The blown call now leaves the Lions at 0-4 and their season is a total waste and it’s only the second week of October! Meow, meow, meow!

Caught napping

The Michigan State Spartans looked terrible in defeating the Purdue Boilermakers last Saturday. The sloppy victory cost MSU to slip to No. 4 in the polls. I cannot emphasize how bad Purdue is. MSU jumped out to a 21-0 lead and then took a long nap. The nap almost cost them the football game. Michigan State rolls into Rutgers for a night game at 8 p.m. on Saturday. MSU is 14-point favorites to win. I like Sparty to roll Rutgers 34-13.

The Wolverines will have a tough home game on Saturday against the Northwestern Wildcats. The game at the Big House starts at 3:30 p.m. This will be a battle of top defenses. Michigan is now the No. 1 defense in the country statistically. The Wolverines are 8-point favorites to win. I like Michigan by four over the Wildcats. The final score: Michigan 20 and Northwestern 16.

Baseball playoffs underway

The Major League Baseball Playoffs started Tuesday. The American League Wild card had the Houston Astros in the Bronx zoo taking on the hated New York Yankees. I sure hope Houston won after I filed this column on Tuesday. The National League Wild card game is the Chicago Cubs in Pittsburgh taking on the Pirates. I like the Cubbies to advance in this ball game.

The Houston/New York winner gets the Kansas City Royals. The Cubs/Pirates winner gets the St. Louis Cardinals. Toronto is playing the Texas Rangers in the other American League series. The other National League series is the L.A. Dodgers and the New York Mets. I like the Dodgers and Blue Jays to advance.

I have stated this fact numerous times but I absolutely love playoff baseball. The fact every pitch means something and the managerial moves during the game are crucial and many times debated the next day. How many times does a no-name player get a big hit or huge home run? The answer is, many times over the series, it happens.

It does seem funny not seeing the Ole English D playing October baseball!

Quick shot: The Red Wings open up Friday night at Joe Louis Arena. Toronto is coming to town.
