AUBURN HILLS — Jake Weissend has one last chance to pin down a state wrestling championship, starting today.

The Carman-Ainsworth senior is competing at 145 pounds in the Div. 1 individual state finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills. He needs four consecutive wins over the next three days to earn the coveted prize.

Weissend, 54-0 this season, will begin his quest with a first-round match against Jack Addy, 30-17, of Rochester Adams. A win would likely send him up against fourth-seeded Ed Nuttall of Ypsilanti Lincoln.

Weissend is closing out a career that has seen him set the school record for career wins with a 208-21 record so far. He earned his second straight regional championship on Feb. 18.

Weissend was second in last year’s finals, being forced to default the title match. He has several college offers, including one from Central Michigan. — D.N.
