The Michigan Wolverines’ home opener was a 36-14 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday. The Big House actually had some early boo birds in the first half and third quarter. UofM was flat and played uninspired football for most of the game. The offense was sluggish and sloppy, as Wilton Speight was overthrowing and underthrowing his receivers. The quarterback play must improve if the Wolverines are to continue to grow as a football team in 2017. The defense will continue to improve rapidly, I believe.
The running game was in good hands with running back Ty Isaac. Ty rushed for a career-high of 133 yards. The Wolverines will be at home against Air Force, that will bring the option running attack to the Big House. The game is set for high noon and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
Defense wins games
The Michigan State Spartans took on MAC foe Western Michigan and came away with a 28-14 victory. The Spartans’ defense looked sharp against the Western Michigan running game. The Broncos did not look as good offensively as it did the previous week against USC.
The Spartans do not look like the 3-9 team from last season. I like the fact the Spartans are hanging their hats on physical defense, which is what the program has had under coach Dantonio. The Spartans have a bye week and will host Notre Dame on September 23.
How about the shocker in Columbus, Ohio? The Oklahoma Sooners pulled off the 31-16 stunner, as Ohio State very rarely gets defeated at home. I will say the play of J.T. Barrett, the OSU quarterback, is suspect at best. I felt really bad when Ohio State lost; not!
Long reach for Lions
The Super Bowl-bound Detroit Lions, the beloved Motor City Kittys, start out with a 35-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The Super Bowl comment is a long reach, but the enthusiasm of a win at home can produce some optimism. No, I don’t think the Lions are going to the Super Bowl unless they buy tickets. Who would have predicted Stafford’s first TD pass would be to the Arizona Cardinals? Another question is, why do the Lions start every game so darned slow? It gets annoying every single week. However, Matt Stafford tossed four touchdown passes and rallied the Lions in the fourth quarter, as he did all last season. Matt was 29/41 for 292 yards; a very good afternoon.
The rookie, Kenny Golladay, was a Lions’ tale of two halves. He dropped balls like a hot football in the first half. However, redeemed himself with two touchdowns in the second half. I think he is going to be a keeper and an awesome third-round selection from the draft.
The veteran, Golden Tate, caught 10 balls for 107 yards. The receivers dropped five balls, which is a serious negative once again. The running game was abysmal and must improve! I also want to say that Carson Palmer needs to retire. He was awful, as he tossed three picks and looked washed-up.
The Lions will be on prime time Monday Night Football this week and will take on Eli Manning and the New York (football) Giants. The Giants stunk up the joint in Dallas last Sunday losing to the Cowboys. This is a very winnable road game for the felines. The Giants hope Odell Beckham Jr. can play and I, and Lions fans, hope he sits out one more week. I am calling for a Lions victory on the road. The crystal cheeseball sees Lions 30 and Little Giants 27.
So much for the hype
Remember when The L.A. Dodgers were going to break the all-time wins for a MLB season a month ago? The Dodgers cannot buy a win, going 1-15 in their last 16 games! How in the heck can that happen? The Cleveland Indians are on total fire that you would need a hundred dogs on a fire hydrant to put the flames out. They have reeled off 18 straight wins. Baseball is a funny game, folks.
The fat Guy’s NFL selections were very ho-hum for the opening week. The best bet was awful.
