— Students ages 3-103 interested in learning Tae Kwon Do can now take classes every Friday from 6-6:45 p.m. at 8048 Miller Rd., a branch location of World Martial Arts Academy.
Grand Master David Weatherly, owner and director of World Martial Arts Academy, teaches all the classes, which are open to boys and girls, will run all year long and cost $45 a month. “There are no limits on class sizes,” he said.
Along with Weatherly, the classes will be taught by second and thirddegree black belts from his studio. “Usually, I’ll have two to three helpers for the class,” he said. “The more helpers means better personal attention.”
Although students are paying to train in Swartz Creek, Weatherly said tournaments, special training and additional activities will be held in the Fenton headquarters of World Martial Arts Academy. “The program is brand new in Swartz Creek. It will be a good class,” Weatherly said.
Weatherly, a ninth degree black belt, has practiced Tae Kwon Do for 50 years and has been teaching since 1973. His first school was located on N. Saginaw St. in Flint and from there, he has operated studios in West Flint, Flushing and Swartz Creek.
“I do this 100 percent, full-time,” he said. “I have a very good reputation in the martial arts business, and I am not going anywhere.”
Registration is preferred for the classes, but Weatherly said walk-ins will be welcome. “They can show up, but we would prefer registration so we can get all the information on the student,” he said. “We always want to make people feel welcome, which has made us successful.”
