Wrestling team competes at Frankenmuth



FRANKENMUTH – The Carman- Ainsworth wrestling team competed in the Battle in Bavaria at Frankenmuth on Saturday, with multiple wrestlers earning top-five placements.

At 160 pounds, Jacob Durbin finished second overall after a win by fall at 2:00 over Daniel Barger of Frankenmuth in the first round. In the quarterfinal, Durbin defeated Lapeer’s Matthew Bollman by fall at 3:51 to advance to the semifinal, where he would win by 9-2 decision over Chesaning’s Lane Miller. In the first-place match, Durbin lost by fall to Gavin Alderman of Brandon.

Jabril Muhammad at 112 finished third overall, beginning his day with a firstround bye before defeating Whitmore Lake’s Jack Stewart by injury default in the quarterfinal. Muhammad lost his semifinal match to Saline’s Brent Marvin by fall and then bounced back with a 10-4 decision win over Fenton’s Ella Turnblom in the third-place match.

At 119, Kinanje Haney also finished third overall, beginning the tournament with a win by fall at 1:07 over Frankenmuth’s Noah Elias. In the quarterfinal, Haney defeated Farwell Area’s Gabriel Peixoto by fall at 1:49. Haney then lost by fall in the semifinal to Brett Thornell of Saline before rebounding with a win by fall at 1:32 over Philip Moeggenborg of Chesaning.

Chase Williams at 189 finished fourth and began his day with a win by fall at 5:22 over Brandon’s Gavin Leigh. Williams then defeated North Branch’s Lawson Rutledge of North Branch by fall at 0:40 in the quarterfinal before losing by fall to Quaid Wilkins of Chesaning in the semifinal. In the thirdplace match, Williams lost by fall to Lukas Zywicki of Fenton.

At 112, Isaiah Robinson finished fifth overall, stating his day with a first-round bye before losing by fall in the quarterfinal to Ella Turnblom of Fenton. Robinson then had a pair of byes through the consolation semifinal before defeating Chesaning’s Alex Marzluft by 13-8 decision in the fifth-place match.

Larry Brown at 135 won his first match of the day over Bryson Geitman of Chesaning by fall at 3:11 before losing by fall in the quarterfinal to Brandon’s Bryson Gunn. In the second consolation round, Brown won by fall at 2:44 over Blake Duryea of Roscommon before defeating Nick Abbe of Roscommon by a 13-10 decision in the consolation semifinal. Brown then lost to North Branch’s Anthony Hobbs by fall in the fifth-place match to end his day.

At 103, Tayshaun Vanamberg won his first match of the day by fall at 3:56 over David Montreuil of Brandon. In the quarterfinal, Vanamberg lost by fall to Lukas Roth of Roscommon before bouncing back with a win by fall at 0:18 over Josh Juillett of Frankenmuth. In the consolation semifinal, Vanamberg lost by 5-2 decision to Zachary Dickson of Millington to end his tournament run. Brijesh Kumar at 125 won his first match of the day by fall at 3:04 over Brad Hensley of Brandon before losing by decision to both Gavin Cotterman of North Branch and Nate Morris of Frankenmuth in the quarterfinal and second consolation round, respectively.

Sonny Morgan at 140 lost to Millington’s David Tebedo by fall in the first round before receiving a bye in the first consolation round. In the second consolation round, Morgan lost to Cody Yonkman of North Branch by fall. At 285, Jelani Hamilton lost by fall in the first round to Jacob Harbach of Saline before receiving a bye in the first consolation round. Hamilton then won by fall at 3:37 over Zach Adkins of Frankenmuth in the second consolation round before losing by decision to Fenton’s Jackson Cairnduff in the consolation semifinal.
